NOTE ello and welcome to the latest edition of IDC. In today’s business environment with improvements in technology, data must be generated more quickly to accommodate demand. Ultimately, this requires more power availability, greater storage, faster connectivity and higher levels of local compute. This is certainly true for the Wellcome Sanger Institute data centre which has benefitted from the deployment of a solution from Schneider Electric. H This month’s cover star, Simon Binley, Data Centre Manager at Wellcome Sanger Institute, discusses the implementation in more depth in this month’s End User Insight. He told us: “It’s hard to predict what level of data centre capacity we’ll need over the next five to 10 years, but all the trends point towards the requirement for greater IT capability; the more processing power you have the greater the scientific capability. Every year, the sequencers generate data more quickly as the technology improves. IT has to keep up with that demand.” On p47 you can find out how the Wellcome Sanger Institute achieved greater performance with Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure platform, which gives it greater visibility into the IT and power infrastructure, while ensuring it can drive both operational and energy efficiency. Elsewhere, in this month’s feature from the DCA, we hear from Stephen Whatling, Chairman at Business Critical Solutions. www.intelligentdatacentres.com He discusses how Edge Computing is contributing to the development of the data centre landscape to support the growing demand for connectivity and availability. He tells us that Edge Computing will be able to handle more than a traditional network with many more transactions per second over many more locations and architectures. But he asks how and when will this infrastructure be delivered. To find out more, turn to page 21. In ‘Expert Opinion’ we look at how Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is in the business of delivering breakthrough technologies helping customers transform industries, markets and lives. We speak to Marc Waters, Managing Director UK, Ireland, Middle East and Africa, HPE, about the future of data management, operating at the Edge and the pace of technical innovation. He talks about the need for IT leaders to think carefully about where they are putting their data and how to keep control of it. In a wide-ranging discussion on page 40, he also tells us that operating at the Edge is non-negotiable and talks us through those trends he expects to see accelerating this year. As usual, we have all your favourite features and a comprehensive news round-up from across the region. You can also read daily news updates on our website at www. intelligentdatacentres.com/.
