Research highlights a growing need for technology stack unification

umpCloud , a leading US

J software company , has released its 2022 IT Stack Unification Statistics and Trends report . The report surveyed IT professionals from small- to medium-sized enterprises ( SMEs ) across a range of sectors and highlighted a growing need for technology stack unification .

Prioritising and solidifying IT models
Other key findings highlighted IT budget expectations for next year :
• 74.2 % expect an increase
• Some ( 20.4 %) expect that it will remain the same
• A small proportion ( 5.4 %) expect a decrease
The report also found that the majority of respondents ( 48.9 %) said 10 – 25 % of their yearly IT budget goes towards licensing , while 3.6 % said that more than 75 % of their budget goes towards licensing .
From April 2021 – June 2022 , there was a major change in how and where employees worked . In April 2021 – during the pandemic – 40 % of employees were reportedly in-office , whereas in June 2022 , this number was nearly 50 %. Remote working increased to over 30 % in October 2021 , before decreasing in June 2022 .
These figures may be down to remote working making it harder for employees to follow reliable security practices . The report also found that :
• Only 36.6 % believed their accounts were centrally managed ; security measured being controlled by IT at all times
• Some ( 17.1 %) said that all accounts were unmanaged with security policies strictly enforced
• 13.4 % said security measures were encouraged but not mandated
Businesses are investing in support for IT
When asked to what extent does a Managed Service Provider ( MSP ) play a role in your IT programme , the survey found :
• 37.9 % of respondents said they use an MSP to support the internal IT team
• 27.1 % use one MSP to completely manage IT
• 22.5 % don ’ t use an MSP but are considering one
• 12.5 % don ’ t plan on using one
The biggest focus of tech stack and IT vendor management is security
When asked what the biggest challenges for IT teams had been since April 2021 , respondents said :
• Security ( 59.4 %)
• Device management ( 48.1 %)
• Migrating workers to hybrid or remote work ( 47.8 %)
• Ongoing remote worker management ( 45.5 %)
• Cost of solutions required to make remote work happen ( 40.3 %)
Regarding security , respondents cited network attacks ( 39.7 %), ransomware ( 30.9 %) and software vulnerability exploits ( 30.6 %) as their top three concerns .
Overall growing need for technology unification
Looking into how many tools or applications organisations use to manage the employee life cycle and the various tools needed to do their job , the survey found that :
• The majority of respondents ( 42.7 %) use between two and three
• 20.5 % use between three to four
• Only 18 % use one to two
The survey also found that a very small number ( 1.2 %) use none , while 17.6 % use four or more .
