Aggreko establishes Stockholm depot to support Nordics
NEWS
T emporary utilities specialist , Aggreko , has opened a depot in Stockholm in an effort to provide continued support to the growing Nordic data centre market . this growth , Aggreko has established a facility in Stockholm , which will provide temperature control , contingency power and loadbank testing services to the region .
According to Research and Market ’ s Nordic Data Centre Market – Industry Outlook & Forecast 2022 – 2027 , the Nordic region witnessed investments totalling € 4.89 billion in 2021 and is set to receive an additional € 9.52 billion by 2027 . In response to
“ The Nordic region has rapidly become recognised as an ideal location for the construction of data centres ,” said John Fraser , Sector Development Manager for Data Centres at Aggreko . “ This can largely be attributed to the availability of green energy sources in the region , as well as the free cooling potential that the climate provides .
“ We ’ re seeing new hyperscale facilities crop up all the time , with each requiring temporary power and temperature control to support the build , as well as comprehensive loadbank testing once it ’ s completed . With the colocation and Edge markets also experiencing similar growth , it simply made sense to have a facility local to these data centres that can provide these services .”
Opened in May , the depot will serve the capital and its surrounding regions , with the closest site previously located in Malmö , on Sweden ’ s south coast . As part of its day-to-day activities , the facility will also be responsible for the testing and repair of equipment .
Volkswagen AG aims to make data centres climate-neutral by 2027
ccelerating its decarbonisation strategy , Volkswagen AG has set itself the ambitious goal to make its data
A centres net carbon-neutral by 2027 . This would be three years earlier than foreseen in the European Green Deal , under which European data centre operators agreed to make their data centres climate-neutral by 2030 .
The cooperation with Green Mountain started back in June 2019 , when Volkswagen Group opened its data centre operations at Green Mountain ’ s RJU1-Rjukan site in Telemark , Norway .
To achieve this goal , Volkswagen has expanded its data centre operations at Green Mountain , a Norwegian operator of CO 2 - neutral data centres . All servers at Green Mountain run on 100 % renewable electricity generated by hydropower and are cooled naturally by the adjacent fjord .
“ Green IT is a key topic on our ESG agenda . While technology is the key driver for more efficiency , an improved customer experience and new business models , IT accounts for about 3 % of global CO₂ emissions ,” said Hauke Stars , Member of the Board of Management , IT and Digitalisation . “ Given the rising demand for computing power and data storage to enable Volkswagen Group ’ s NEW AUTO strategy , a sustainable IT roadmap with ambitious goals is paramount to systematically reduce our carbon footprint . With data centres being the biggest contributor of carbon emissions in IT , expanding our computing capacity at Green Mountain is a strong lever to make our data centre operations carbon-neutral by 2027 .”
