Intelligent Data Centres .
On August ’ s cover , we speak to Steve Martin ,
Technology Director at Bord Gáis Energy , who tells us about the on-going collaboration with Kyndryl and the focus on improving the Irish utility company ’ s IT infrastructure , hyperscale operations and customer experiences .
“ Kyndryl has been a trusted partner of Bord Gáis Energy since 2011 . Thanks to our longstanding relationship , Kyndryl has a clear understanding of our strategic objectives , enabling us to work as a unified team ,” says Martin .
“ As a business , when you adopt newer , faster technologies , you are going to see a natural reduction in energy consumption . We ’ ve seen the effects of this as part of our partnership with Kyndryl and adopting a cloud-based model and consumptionon-demand approach . We ’ ve been able to reduce the number of racks in our data centres and reduce reliance on our data centres more generally – thus reducing our carbon footprint .”

On pages 31 – 34 , in this month ’ s Editor ’ s Question , we ask industry experts what strategies should be used to address construction challenges related to economic recovery , sustainability , workforce shortages , AI demand and Edge data centres . We hear from David Mitchell , Founder and CEO , XYZ Reality ; David Watkins , Solutions Director , VIRTUS Data Centres ; and Branden Kotyk , Vice President and General Manager EMEA , Victaulic .
We ’ ve seen data centres made out of wood , and notions of underwater facilities , but what about in space ? On page 37 , we
speak to Yves Durand , Director of Technology for Thales Alenia Space , who discusses the recent findings from ASCEND ’ s recent study which confirms space data centres could transform the European digital landscape .
“ The main advantage of space data centres would be , of course , their lower environmental footprint , which is becoming an increasing concern for terrestrial means . But there are other advantages , as they would be disconnected from the ground energy grid , and with more controlled cybersecurity access ,” says Durand .
“ The cooling would also be different , radiating heat in space through heat pump systems , allowing for higher processing density , for example .”
Don ’ t forget you can read daily news updates on our website . I ’ d like to wish you a good month ahead and please enjoy the read !
