TALKING BUSINESS
What are the region-specific challenges you encounter in your role?
In my role, the region-specific challenges I encounter are largely aligned with global challenges, but there are particular nuances in the Nordic region( being part of Europe) due to mandatory security, data sovereignty and sustainability regulations such as the EU Taxonomy and the Energy Efficiency Directive( EED), ISO / IEC frameworks and GDPR. These frameworks require significant investment in new technologies and processes to ensure compliance and are essential to ensure we continue to provide a second-tonone service for our clients.
Many data centre operators have the significant challenge of securing reliable and sustainable energy sources. In some countries, like Ireland for example, accessing the grid can be constrained, necessitating investment in renewable energy projects. The Nordics do benefit from renewable energy sources, yet it is important that data center operators work with energy providers to invest in power infrastructure to ensure stability of the supply long term.
In areas like the Nordics where data centre development is increasing, atNorth believes that community engagement is also essential. Our vision is the creation of data center ecosystems that are fundamental to the societies in which they operate. From supporting power and networking infrastructure and providing long term employment opportunities, to contributing to a circular economy via heat reuse initiatives and community education or biodiversity projects. Data centres have become an essential part of modern life, and it is therefore imperative that we operate in a proactive and responsible manner across the board.
What changes to your job role have you seen in the last year and how do you see these developing in the coming months?
Over the past years, my role has focused on adapting to evolving industry challenges, particularly around sustainability regulations and further improvements in energy efficiency. While my core responsibilities remain the same, the emphasis on meeting legal standards and securing reliable energy sources has intensified.
The data centre industry is growing and constantly evolving so I expect to continue adapting to these challenges, ensuring compliance, and integrating sustainable practices to maintain our service delivery.
