OPTIMIZING UPS TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP IN DATA CENTERS

Introduction
Uninterruptible Power Supply( UPS) systems are crucial for ensuring the reliable operation of data centers.
Within the importance of energy continuity, a modern UPS system can also guarantee a high-quality energy feed for the critical IT loads, protecting them from grid disturbances, harmonics pollution, frequency instability, and the like.
Set against these advantages, an advanced, high-performance UPS system can incur significant costs that need to be managed effectively over the operating lifetime of the data center.
It is important to identify and understand the key technical factors which have an impact on the costs, in order to identify strategies that optimize the Total Cost of Ownership( TCO) of the UPS, without affecting its performance and functions which must guarantee maximum availability, energy continuity and optimum protection against energy problems.
CO Definition:
TCO is the sum of the initial Capital Expenditures( CapEx), which includes the cost of equipment and installation expenses, and the ongoing and longterm operational expenditure( OpEx).
The CapEx is immediately known at the selection of a UPS suitable for the data center needs. The Capex is mainly related to the UPS typology, technology, performance, and features.
In contrast, the OpEx is not always easy to know at the beginning of UPS ownership, since it depends on the actual( as opposed to planned) usage, working conditions, and ordinary maintenance of the UPS throughout its life.
