T overwhelmingly focused on displacement. That framing misses something significant. An often-overlooked boom in data centre infrastructure is opening up a growing number of new, highly skilled roles across a broader range of disciplines than most people realise. According to LinkedIn’ s Labour Market Report, that’ s over 1.3 million roles worldwide and it’ s redefining what technology careers look like.
Yet many of these opportunities remain hidden in plain sight. While the broader tech landscape continues to attract aspiring professionals, most gravitate towards its more visible sides: sales, product design, software development, often overlooking the hands-on engineering and infrastructure roles that keep the digital world running. In the UK, that invisibility is fuelling a pipeline problem made worse by an ageing workforce. With 19 % of data centre professionals over 55 and up to half of all engineers projected to retire within the next three years, the pressure is only set to grow.
