OPTIMAL TRANSIT TAKES AI INFRASTRUCTURE OFFSHORE
Optimal Transit is expanding the concept of the floating AI data centre with a new configuration of its Kraaken platform, combining 60 MW of compute capacity with offshore electricity generation and desalination for coastal communities.
T he race to secure enough power, water and physical space for the next generation of AI infrastructure is forcing technology companies to reconsider where data centres can be built. Some companies, such as Optimal Transit, believe part of the answer could lie offshore.
The maritime technology partnership between InMar Technologies and OptiFuel Systems has unveiled a second configuration of its Kraaken platform that combines AI computing infrastructure with electricity generation and freshwater production aboard a single vessel.
Known as the Blue Economy VITAL 100 MW Kraaken, the vessel is designed to provide up to 40 MW of continuous baseload electricity to shore, produce approximately 30 million litres of fresh water every day and retain 60 MW of capacity for AI-grade data centre workloads.
Optimal Transit says the electricity output would be sufficient for approximately 32,000 homes, while its desalination system could provide water for an estimated 150,000 people.
