EDITOR’ S LETTER

ALIX PRESSLEY, EDITOR

W elcome to the latest edition of Intelligent Data Centres magazine. This month, we put climate concerns in the spotlight as we explore how they’ re applying increasing pressure on digital infrastructure.

On the cover this issue we have Professor Lee Poh Seng, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore. The full story can be found on page 14 where you can learn about the university’ s partnership with BW Digital as both commit to quantum-ready data centres in the tropics.
The collaboration aims to bridge academic research and realworld infrastructure, turning quantum-readiness into practical engineering requirements for facilities in the region. A key area of study will be how tropical operating environments, such as Singapore and Batam, present unique infrastructure challenges for quantum systems.
Offering his input on the widespread unease around water use is Moorthy Palanivelu, Head of Data Centres & Hydrogen Generation, EMEA, Envirogen Group, on page 35. He explains why site-wide water planning needs to sit alongside power, land and connectivity from the outset and how early specialist input can help operators avoid costly redesign later.
Elsewhere in the magazine, starting from page 28, you’ ll find technology-specific stories on subjects like Edge Computing and power, with more regular updates available on our website: https:// www. intelligentdatacentres. com /

I hope you enjoy the read!
A significant area of discussion this edition is water and the concerns around its use within the industry. On page 19, we look at Schneider Electric’ s report which reveals ageing infrastructure and cyber threats top UK water resilience concerns.
Alex Richards, Vice President for Industrial Process & Automation, Schneider Electric, explains that water resilience depends on more than recognising the risk – it requires investment in infrastructure, better visibility of water networks and strong cybersecurity as those networks become more connected.
On page 23, Chris Osian, Product Manager at Starline, a brand of Legrand, suggests the rules of data centre power distribution are being rewritten. He offers his expert opinion on how operators can build flexibility into their power distribution, why plug-in space is now at a premium and why 800-volt DC could be the next big shift.
