It ’ s a new year which means predicting what lies ahead for data centres , although the irony is the technology market is moving at such a pace that it is challenging to do so . I recently had a conversation with someone who has been in tech for 30 years who told me she has never , ever seen the pace of change she ’ s seen over this last year . Hopefully this means we should expect an exciting year ahead .
In September last year , data centres were deemed by the UK Government as Critical National Infrastructure which means the industry can expect greater government support in recovering from and anticipating potential cyberattacks , contributing to business success and reassuring data centre organisations . This development will also serve to boost business confidence for data centre investment within the UK , helping to fuel economic growth .

We ’ ve also seen the rise of AI place pressure on data centres to increase reliability expectations and discover new ways to reduce energy impact . This is expected to continue – at a heightened pace – over the course of the next 12 months as data centre companies are forced to rethink their IT infrastructure . Adopting the right AI strategy will also be key to successful implementation and development moving forward .
It ’ s possible to predict that further investment will be dedicated to making data centres greener , with more innovative projects popping up worldwide and budgets being allocated to sustainable initiatives .
I ’ ll be interested to see what happens with the skills gap and how it develops after some invaluable conversations over the last year around making the younger demographic more aware of the possibilities within the industry . I ’ d like to see this gap reduce and more young people take a chance on data centres , but only time will tell .
The year ahead looks reassuring for economic growth and investment , particularly for the UK , but data centre organisations must operate with agile and modern infrastructure and an ability to maintain a sense of purpose when it comes to innovation . �
