ALIGNED DATA CENTERS ANNOUNCES 2 GW‘ PROJECT PHOENIX’ CAMPUS
Aligned Data Centers, a leading developer and operator of ultra-efficient data centres, has announced‘ Project Phoenix’, a new 2 GW data centre campus located in Shippingport, Pennsylvania.
Spanning three facilities, the development will meet robust regional demand for digital infrastructure while anchoring an estimated US $ 10 billion in regional economic investment.
“ Project Phoenix represents the future of responsible data centre development,” said Andrew Schaap, CEO of Aligned.“ The project is a legacy reimagined that transforms a dormant industrial site into a foundational asset for the local community. Beyond delivering critical infrastructure for our customers, this investment establishes a powerful new economic hub for Western Pennsylvania and creates long-term prosperity for local workers and the community.” of our projects and communities is essential to our continued growth. Project Phoenix serves as a model for how advanced digital infrastructure can sustainably fuel regional economies. Most importantly, it proves that data centre development can be done right.”
Project Phoenix will use its own dedicated onsite power source rather than the local electrical grid. Located in the Shippingport Industrial Park, the campus sits adjacent to the Shippingport Power Station, a former coal power plant that is being redeveloped into an advanced, natural gas energy campus. Once completed, the project is expected to deliver substantial excess power capacity back to the grid, boosting supply for the country’ s largest power grid operator and Pennsylvania consumers.
“ We proudly support Governor Shapiro’ s GRID standards and are a signatory of the Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” said Schaap.“ We have always held ourselves to a higher bar because doing things the right way is simply who we are. We aren’ t just a responsible developer; we operate these facilities and stay in the communities we build, so the long-term success
DataVita is also the largest supplier of cloud services to the Scottish public sector through the Scottish Government ' s Cloud and Hosting Services framework, with services used every day across Scotland running on its infrastructure. The company is headquartered in Lanarkshire and employs its team in Scotland, as well as building and operating its own facilities.
DataVita, Scotland ' s homegrown data centre operator and cloud provider, has submitted a planning application to North Lanarkshire Council for DV4, a new data centre at Chapelhall. The site forms part of the Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone, designated by the UK Government in January 2026 as the first in Scotland.
DV4 is the next stage of a campus DataVita has operated for more than 10 years. The company built, owns and runs DV1 at Chapelhall, Scotland ' s largest purpose-built Tier III certified data centre. It is also constructing DV3 next door and operates its second facility in Glasgow.
DATAVITA SUBMITS PLANS FOR DV4, ITS THIRD DATA CENTRE AT CHAPELHALL
The submission for planning permission in principle is supported by a full suite of technical assessments, covering energy and decarbonisation, noise, air quality, transport, flood risk and drainage, ecology and landscape, heritage, ground conditions, economic impact and construction environmental management, so that the council and the public can see more detail of the proposals now, rather than later.
DataVita held four public consultation events, published all exhibition material online throughout and issued a public FAQ, updated after each event. Feedback has shaped the design of the development. The maximum building height has been reduced from 30 metres to 26 metres, operational plant has been placed to the south of the building away from homes and around 1,000 metres of new native hedgerow will be planted, at least double the length being removed.
A feasibility study is underway for a community garden and greenhouse, warmed by surplus heat from the data centre, an idea raised by residents at the consultation events which would be funded through a community investment fund.
